The Financing of Education : An Economic Issue ?

Building on previous contributions on the same topic, this article gives a brief overview of the financial situation of Education in the different regions of the world then focuses on the shortcomings of the traditional treatment of financing issues by economist among them the quasi absence of equity consideration. It ends by discussing the main issues as they can be seen today : extent of the "right to education", demand side approach to education financing, choice between various types of subsides to students.
Tariffs and efficient performance by water suppliers: an empirical approach

Water leaks are an environmental and sustainable issue as well as an economic issue. The objective of this paper is to analyse the efficiency of a sample of Spanish urban water systems by considering water leaks in a network as undesirable outputs. Data envelopment analysis (DEA), an analytical benchmarking methodology, is used to calculate technical and economic efficiency. We also discuss the possible relationship between efficiency and tariffs charged to users. Results show that the possibilities for reducing water leaks in networks are high, thus demonstrating that there is room for savings from an economic and environmental point of view. Economic conditions and populist radical right voting: The role of issue salience

Contains fulltext : 245174.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) In this article, we show with the European Election Study from nine Western European countries that issue salience of the economy and immigration contributes to our understanding of the puzzling relation between economic conditions and populist radical right support. In countries with relatively weak or worsening economic conditions, the economy is considered more salient, whereas immigration loses salience – also compared to other issues. In this paper we analyze whether countries of the EC community should plead for a decentralized system to finance the European funds rather than using a uniform tax imposed by the European parliament. The analysis is within a multistage game-theoretic framework in which the implication of the financing system of a confederation on the investment behavior in the respective states is considered.
